RIYADH: Saudi Arabia is accelerating development of its space programme, investing in satellites, infrastructure and domestic expertise as the Kingdom seeks to strengthen technological sovereignty and expand its knowledge-based economy.
The growing ambitions were showcased at LEAP 2026, where Neo Space Group (NSG) highlighted its role in building and operating Saudi space capabilities while developing infrastructure and local talent.
A central element of the programme is the Saudi Geostationary Satellite 1 (SGS-1), which is being developed as a major step towards establishing satellite communications systems operated from within the Kingdom.
Saudi Arabia Builds Sovereign Space Capabilities
NSG is also developing advanced operational infrastructure and supporting systems required to manage satellites and their services domestically.
The initiative is intended to strengthen Saudi Arabia’s ability to operate critical space capabilities independently while reducing reliance on external infrastructure and expertise.

Beyond satellite operations, the Kingdom’s strategy focuses on localising knowledge and technical expertise and developing Saudi professionals capable of supporting the expanding sector.
The effort reflects a broader shift in Saudi Arabia’s technology strategy, with space increasingly viewed not simply as a scientific field but as a strategic domain supporting communications, innovation and national development.
NSG’s presence at LEAP 2026 also underlined the growing connection between Saudi Arabia’s space ambitions and its wider push to develop advanced technologies.
By combining satellite development, operational infrastructure and local talent, the Kingdom is seeking to build an integrated space ecosystem capable of supporting its long-term technological and economic objectives.
