KYIV: A Russian drone strike triggered a major fire and explosions at a warehouse near Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, wounding at least six people and forcing more than 200 people, including children, to evacuate, Ukrainian authorities said early Saturday.

The attack took place shortly after 8 pm (1700 GMT) on Friday in the village of Myla, in the Bucha district on the outskirts of Kyiv.

Russia and Ukraine have intensified long-range strikes in recent months, increasingly hitting civilian and industrial infrastructure, including logistics warehouses as well as oil and port facilities.

The attacks have resulted in a growing number of civilian casualties as the war continues.

A fire broke out and was “accompanied by explosions”, Tymur Tkachenko, head of the regional military administration, said on Telegram.

“More than 200 people have already been evacuated from the scene, including children,” he said in the Telegram post.

Investigation Into Storage Conditions

Ukraine’s prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into possible “negligence” over the storage conditions at the premises.

The investigation will examine “the legality of the… storage of explosive objects and materials on the enterprise’s grounds” and whether the unnamed company had the “necessary permits and approvals”.

The probe follows concerns over the safety of storing potentially explosive materials near populated areas.

Calls For Accountability

Prime Minister Sergiy Koretsky expressed regret that authorities had not learned from a previous deadly attack in July on a munitions depot in Vyshneve, near Kyiv.

An investigation into that incident found serious failings by a state-owned company, which had not complied with safety standards despite residential buildings being located nearby.

“In the fifth year of the full-scale invasion, making the same mistakes over and over is criminal negligence,” Koretsky said on Telegram.

“Everyone responsible, without exception, must face severe punishment so that such situations never happen again.”
