Pakistan Strengthens Khewra Pink Salt Identity

Pakistan possesses estimated rock salt reserves of more than 65 million metric tonnes, with purity levels reaching up to 99%. More than 36 million metric tonnes of reserves are controlled by the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation.

A major focus of the government’s strategy has been protecting the Pakistani origin of the product commonly marketed internationally as “Himalayan Pink Salt”.

Pakistan has registered and promoted it as “Khewra Pink Rock Salt”, which secured Geographical Indication (GI) registration in July 2022. Efforts are also under way to secure international GI registration and further strengthen Pakistan’s ownership and recognition in global markets.

The government has introduced a dedicated HS Code 2501.0021 for pink salt to improve export documentation and monitoring. A minimum export price of $130 per metric tonne has also been introduced to discourage under-invoicing.

Global Promotion Boosts Pakistan Pink Salt

The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan has showcased pink salt at major international exhibitions, including World Expo 2025 Osaka, Gulfood in the UAE, Anuga in Germany, SIAL events and Foodex Japan.
