5.6 Magnitude Quake Hits Turkey-Iran Border: Officials

TEHRAN: An earthquake with a magnitude of up to 5.9 hit the Turkey-Iran border area on Saturday, damaging houses in a Khoy city in Iran, local officials, media and the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

Iranian emergency services spokesperson Mojtaba Khaledi told the media that the level of destruction of some buildings and houses in Khoy city is high.

Rescue teams have arrived in affected areas: Officials

EMSC said that the quake had a magnitude of 5.6 and was at a depth of 10 km. Iranian media said the earthquake hit the city of Khoy in the country’s western province.

Iranian emergency officials said that rescue teams rushed to the area and hospitals were put on high alert.

An emergency official told the state run TV that it was snowing in some of the areas of the country affected by the earthquake amid cold and that there was some power cuts.
