KYIV: A Russian attack on Ukraine’s southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia killed five people and wounded 20 others on Tuesday, regional authorities said, as missile strikes were also reported in the capital Kyiv.

“Five people killed, a further 20 wounded: sadly, the number of casualties continues to rise following the enemy attack on Zaporizhzhia,” Ivan Fedorov, head of the regional military administration, said on Telegram.

Fedorov said Russian forces struck industrial facilities and infrastructure in the city, while a garage complex and residential buildings were also damaged.

The attack came as explosions were heard in Kyiv shortly after midnight following warnings from authorities about approaching missiles.

Kyiv reports missile attack

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the Ukrainian capital was “under ballistic missile attack”, adding that emergency services had been dispatched to the city’s Shevchenkivsky district.

City authorities said at least one person was wounded in Kyiv.

The latest attacks come amid an increase in Russia’s use of long-range ballistic missiles against Ukrainian cities in recent weeks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier said Russia was preparing to deploy additional North Korean troops and had received new ballistic missiles from Pyongyang.

Ukraine has said intercepting such weapons requires advanced air defence systems, including US-made Patriot batteries.

The attacks come as the war continues more than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine has meanwhile increased its own long-range drone strikes against Russian territory, including attacks on cities and infrastructure far from the border.
