NEW DELHI: Opposition leaders on Thursday staged a protest at the Makar Dwar entrance of the Indian Parliament, calling for accountability from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the police action against students during demonstrations on July 20.
The protest was organised by opposition lawmakers, who alleged that the police response to the student demonstrations was excessive and demanded that the government explain the circumstances under which force was used. Holding placards and raising slogans, the leaders urged the Centre to ensure transparency and uphold democratic rights.

The demonstration highlighted growing concerns among opposition parties regarding the handling of student protests and the government’s response to dissent. They argued that students have the right to express their views peacefully and called for those responsible for the use of force to be held accountable.
The protest took place at the Makar Dwar, one of the main entrances to Parliament, drawing attention to the issue as the legislature continued its proceedings. Opposition members reiterated their demand for a detailed statement from Home Minister Amit Shah and sought assurances that similar incidents would not recur.
The demonstration forms part of the opposition’s broader campaign to press the government for answers over recent law enforcement actions and to seek greater accountability on matters concerning civil liberties and democratic rights.

Meanwhile, India’s youth-led “Cockroach” movement has threatened to resume nationwide protests, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government of reneging on its promise not to take action against student demonstrators following last week’s mass protests that forced the resignation of the education minister.
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which spearheaded demonstrations over examination paper leaks and irregularities, said police had detained or harassed hundreds of students despite assurances that no punitive action would be taken against protesters.
“If the government does not honour the agreement and release everyone detained or arrested, we will be compelled to resume the protest,” CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka told reporters.
