EAST RUTHERFORD: Kylian Mbappe has won his second FIFA World Cup Golden Boot after finishing as the top scorer of the 2026 tournament.
The France captain scored 10 goals and provided three assists in six matches, becoming the first player to win the World Cup Golden Boot more than once.
Mbappe secured the award after Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in Sunday’s final in East Rutherford, ending Lionel Messi’s chances of overtaking him in the scoring race.
The Real Madrid forward had moved ahead of Messi after scoring twice in France’s 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place playoff on Saturday.
Messi entered the final as Mbappe’s only remaining challenger but failed to score for the third consecutive match as Argentina struggled against Spain’s disciplined defence. The defending champions managed only two shots in the final, both coming late in the match.
Messi finished the tournament with eight goals, while Mbappe ended two clear at the top.
At 27, Mbappe has also become the greatest goalscorer in World Cup history. His two goals against England lifted him to 22 World Cup goals in 22 matches, one ahead of Messi.
Mbappe reached double figures in this tournament with four braces, scoring twice against Iraq, Senegal, Sweden and England.
He became the first player since Germany’s Gerd Muller in 1970 to score 10 goals in a single World Cup.
