NEW DELHI: The rape and murder of a young girl in India’s eastern state of West Bengal has triggered widespread unrest, the lynching of an innocent man and the death of the main suspect in police custody, drawing renewed attention to the country’s struggle with sexual violence and the administration of justice.

The body of the girl, believed to be between 11 and 12 years old, was recovered from a pond in Baruipur on Sunday, a day after her family reported her missing, according to local media reports. Authorities cited by Indian media said the child had been sexually assaulted before being killed.

Video footage showing the recovery of the body spread rapidly on social media, fuelling public outrage and prompting protests across parts of the state.

Protests Turn Violent

The protests soon escalated into violence, with demonstrators vandalising shops, railway infrastructure and police vehicles.

India girl rape

During the unrest, a man believed by local residents to be responsible for the crime was beaten to death by a mob. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari later said the victim was innocent.

“He too will get justice,” Adhikari told reporters.

He added that around 200 people had been identified for damaging police vehicles and vandalising railway property during the unrest.

The chief minister said the state government and police were doing “everything possible” to secure justice for the girl’s family.

Authorities said several people had been arrested in connection with the case.

Main Suspect Dies in Police Custody

The case took another dramatic turn early on Wednesday when the main suspect died during what authorities described as a shootout while in police custody.

According to India’s state-run broadcaster News on Air, investigators had taken the suspect to reconstruct the crime scene when he allegedly snatched a service weapon from a police officer, fired a shot and attempted to flee.

Police returned fire, critically injuring the suspect, who was later pronounced dead.

The incident has prompted further scrutiny of custodial deaths in India, where police encounters involving high-profile suspects have repeatedly raised questions about transparency and accountability.

Renewed Focus on Sexual Violence

The case has once again highlighted India’s long-running struggle to curb violence against women and girls despite legal reforms introduced after the 2012 gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old medical student in New Delhi, widely known as the Nirbhaya case.

The attack prompted nationwide protests and led to sweeping changes in India’s sexual assault laws, including a broader legal definition of rape and tougher penalties for offences such as stalking, voyeurism and sexual assault.

Despite those reforms, campaigners say violence against women remains widespread and that many victims still face barriers in seeking justice.

Government data showed that 29,536 rape cases were recorded across India in 2024, although activists say the true number is likely to be significantly higher because many assaults go unreported.

Campaigners have long argued that deep-rooted social inequalities continue to fuel gender-based violence. The World Economic Forum’s 2025 Gender Gap Report ranked India 131st out of 148 countries for gender equality.

Political Tensions Intensify

The latest killing comes nearly two years after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, a case that also sparked nationwide protests and renewed demands for stronger protections for women.

The Baruipur case has since developed into a political flashpoint in West Bengal.

The Trinamool Congress has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which took control of the state’s administration following elections in May, of failing to ensure the safety of women and girls. The BJP-led state government has rejected the allegations.
