RIYADH: The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jassem Mohamed Albudaiwi, has strongly condemned Iran’s attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait, calling them a blatant violation of the two countries’ sovereignty and a continued attempt by Tehran to destabilise regional peace efforts.

In a statement on Wednesday, Albudaiwi said the attacks posed a direct threat to the safety and security of citizens and residents, while also constituting a serious breach of international law and the UN Charter.

“The attacks confirm Iran’s continued approach aimed at undermining international and regional efforts to establish security and peace and resolve the crisis,” he said.

Serious threat to regional security

Jordan and Egypt also condemned the attacks, warning that they pose a serious threat to regional security and stability while urging all parties to exercise restraint and pursue de-escalation.

Qatar called on all sides to continue engaging in dialogue and diplomacy, urging them to build on the memorandum of understanding reached between Iran and the United States on June 17 to strengthen regional and international security.

Oman also condemned the reported attacks on Saudi and Qatari commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that continued military escalation could jeopardize maritime safety, disrupt international trade, and threaten global energy supplies.

The condemnations came after Bahrain and Kuwait reported fresh Iranian aerial attacks following US retaliatory strikes on targets in Iran. Air raid sirens sounded in both Gulf states, while Bahraini authorities said air defenses intercepted and destroyed Iranian projectiles.

US, Iran trade fresh strikes as Hormuz tensions escalate

Earlier, the United States and Iran traded fresh military strikes, with Tehran saying it launched missile and drone attacks on US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait after Washington struck more than 80 targets across Iran and tightened economic pressure by revoking a key oil sales licence, deepening fears of a wider regional conflict and further straining ceasefire.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had targeted dozens of US military sites in Bahrain and Kuwait in what it described as an initial response to American attacks.

The United States had earlier launched a new wave of strikes against Iran and revoked a licence allowing Tehran to sell oil after three tankers were hit by projectiles in the Strait of Hormuz, further straining the ceasefire reached last month.
