ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is all set to host the South Asian Games after 22 years, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approving Rs11 billion in funding for the 14th edition scheduled for March 2027.
The prime minister has directed authorities to begin preparations immediately, with funds to be released in phases for stadium upgrades, logistics, ceremonies, and administrative arrangements.

According to sources, a South Asian Games Secretariat will be established in Islamabad to oversee and coordinate all preparations for the event. The approval comes as the Pakistan Sports Board confirms that all venues in Lahore, Islamabad, and Faisalabad are 100% operational for the upcoming Games, which are scheduled to kick off in March, 2027, marking a historic return of the multi-sport event to Pakistan after more than two decades.
Over 3,500 athletes from eight nations, including large contingents from Afghanistan and India, will compete across 27 disciplines. For the South Asian region, the Games serve as a vital diplomatic bridge, utilising sport to foster cooperation among neighboring countries with complex political histories.
Security and infrastructure at the forefront
Security has been a top priority for the local organizing committee, with “Games Villages” established under high-level protection to ensure the safety of all international participants. The opening ceremony in Lahore is expected to be a grand showcase of South Asian heritage, with record-breaking television viewership anticipated across the subcontinent.
