ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s internet services have returned to normal after the restoration of the SEA-ME-WE 5 (SMW5) international submarine cable, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced on Friday.

In a statement, the telecom regulator confirmed that the fault affecting the international undersea cable system had been fully rectified, restoring the country’s internet connectivity to its normal operating capacity.

The PTA said the submarine cable is now fully operational, allowing internet services nationwide to function without disruption.

During the repair work, the authority worked closely with Transworld Associates (TWA) to minimise the impact on users.

Internet traffic was temporarily rerouted through alternative international links to maintain service continuity while restoration efforts were under way.

The regulator said the contingency measures helped reduce disruption to broadband and telecommunications services across the country during the outage.

The PTA added that it continues to monitor the resilience and performance of Pakistan’s international connectivity infrastructure to ensure reliable, secure and uninterrupted telecommunications and broadband services nationwide.

The restoration is expected to improve network stability following recent disruptions linked to the fault in one of Pakistan’s key international internet gateways.
