BEIJING: China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday called for maintaining the momentum of negotiations between the US and Iran in a meeting in Beijing with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, China’s state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

“The current ceasefire remains fragile, but talking is better than fighting, and dialogue is better than confrontation,” Wang said.

“The priority is to safeguard and implement the memorandum of understanding, maintain the momentum of negotiations, and work for an early comprehensive agreement agreed by both the United States and Iran, accepted by regional countries, and welcomed by the international community,” Wang Yi said.

During the meeting, the foreign ministers also discussed the latest regional developments, efforts to de-escalate tensions and enhance security and stability, and the importance of ensuring maritime navigation security and preserving freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and international waterways, supporting energy security and global economic stability, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

The Saudi and Chinese foreign ministers reviewed the strategic relations between the two countries and ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation across various fields, serving common interests, according to SPA.

The meeting addressed ways to strengthen economic, trade, and investment cooperation between the two countries and enhance partnership in a number of vital sectors, foremost among them energy, industry, supply chains, and advanced technologies, in line with Saudi Vision 2030’s goals, contributing to developing mutual investments, increasing trade exchange, and opening new horizons for cooperation between the two countries.
