EAST RUTHERFORD: Harry Kane became England’s all-time leading World Cup scorer on Saturday, breaking Gary Lineker’s 36-year-old record as the Three Lions defeated Panama to finish top of Group L.
Kane, who had drawn level with Lineker during England’s 4-2 win over Croatia, moved ahead with his 11th World Cup goal at New York New Jersey Stadium.
The England captain scored with a trademark header in the second half after Jude Bellingham delivered a fine cross into the box.
Kane makes history
Bellingham praised Kane after the match, calling him one of England’s greatest players.
“It’s an honour to play with him. For me he’s the best England player of all time,” Bellingham said.
“He’s the one who has showed up more than anyone, any England player. It’s quite easy to play with him. In all honesty, he’s at a level at the minute which is just incredible.”
England broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute when Bukayo Saka sent a low corner towards Bellingham at the near post, and the Real Madrid midfielder guided his volley into the net.
Kane doubled the lead five minutes later after Bellingham collected Marcus Rashford’s long pass and crossed for the striker to head home.
The victory sent England into the World Cup round of 32, where they will face one of the best third-placed teams on Wednesday.
