WASHINGTON: United States President Donald Trump has asked Congress to approve $87.6 billion in emergency funding, with most of the money intended for urgent needs linked to the war with Iran.
The request was sent by the White House Office of Management and Budget to House Speaker Mike Johnson, a day after Congress passed a resolution criticising the military action.
According to the White House, $67 billion of the proposal is for the Defence Department. This includes $21 billion for munitions, $17.3 billion for operational costs and $12.1 billion for classified programmes.
Congressional resistance grows
The request also includes around $300 million to strengthen security at United States embassies and diplomatic missions in the Middle East and South Asia.
The White House said most of the funding would address urgent needs related to Operation Epic Fury, the name used for the Iran war.
The proposal may face resistance in Congress, where concerns have grown over the cost and duration of the conflict. Washington and Tehran are currently observing a ceasefire, but officials said the Pentagon needs to rebuild military stocks after earlier strikes.
Last month, Pentagon officials told lawmakers the war had cost about $29 billion so far, although some analysts believe the wider financial impact could be higher.
