For the first time since the 1994 World Cup, third-place teams are eligible to advance beyond the group stage. FIFA’s decision follows the tournament’s expansion from 32 to 48 teams, increasing the number of groups from eight to 12 while introducing a 32-team knockout phase.

The eight best third-placed teams will be ranked primarily by points earned during the group stage. If teams are level on points, goal difference will be the first tiebreaker, followed by goals scored. Should teams remain tied, FIFA will consider fair play records based on yellow and red cards, with the official FIFA rankings serving as the final criterion if required.
Once the qualifiers are confirmed after the group stage concludes on June 27, their Round of 32 opponents will be assigned according to FIFA’s pre-determined bracket combinations.

Several teams remain firmly in contention despite not occupying the top two positions in their respective groups. Scotland, Sweden and Paraguay each have three points and remain well placed to challenge for a knockout berth, while Belgium and Cape Verde are still in the hunt with two points apiece.
Ecuador, Czechia and Bosnia and Herzegovina will likely need victories in their final group matches to keep their qualification hopes alive.
