ISLAMABAD: In a landmark moment for Pakistan’s digital economy, freelance exports have surged to a record $1.6 billion in the first eleven months of fiscal year 2025-26, an 80% year-on-year leap that positions the country’s gig workforce as one of the fastest-growing contributors to national exports and places Pakistan firmly on the global map of digital services.
The unprecedented figures, released by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), reveal an extraordinary 80% year-on-year surge in freelance exports, underscoring the rapid maturation of Pakistan’s digital workforce and its increasingly vital role in the nation’s foreign exchange earnings.

In May 2026 alone, Pakistani freelancers earned $169 million from international clients, an eye-popping 87% increase compared to the same month last year, demonstrating that global demand for Pakistani talent shows no signs of slowing down.
Quarter of IT exports
Industry leaders are celebrating the milestone as validation of years of investment in digital skills and infrastructure.
“Pakistan freelancers constitute about a quarter of the total Pakistan IT export income, and this figure is increasing,” said Imran Batada, President and CEO of the Pakistan Association of Freelancers (PAFLA). “The devalued local currency, along with low labor costs, gives rise to the attractiveness of local resources to overseas buyers.”
The numbers place Pakistan second globally among non-high-income countries for online gig economy workers, with 10.2% of its workforce engaged in freelance activities, trailing only India’s dominant 35.2% share.
Global recognition
From software development and artificial intelligence solutions to graphic design, digital marketing, content creation, and business consulting, Pakistani professionals are competing successfully on premier international freelance marketplaces. Industry experts attribute the sector’s explosive growth to:
- Expanded internet accessibility across the country
- Rapidly developing digital skills programs
- Competitive pricing driven by favorable currency exchange rates
- Growing global acceptance of remote work arrangements
Pakistan’s freelance community continues to prove its talent on the global stage. Strong digital policies, skills development, and support for the IT sector are creating new opportunities for youth and contributing significantly to export growth. https://t.co/FMDwZS3QJl

Economic game-changer
Economists view the freelance sector as one of Pakistan’s most dynamic contributors to economic growth, creating thousands of opportunities for young professionals while diversifying the country’s export base beyond traditional sectors.
“This is not just a statistic, it represents thousands of families whose livelihoods have been transformed,” said one industry analyst who requested anonymity. “We’re witnessing the democratization of economic opportunity in real-time.”
Future outlook
With continued investment in technology infrastructure and skill development, Pakistan’s freelance industry is projected to play an even larger role in strengthening the country’s position in the global digital marketplace.
The record-breaking earnings come as Pakistan prepares to cross the $1 billion annual freelance export threshold for the first time, a milestone that industry leaders say is now all but certain by the end of the fiscal year.
