Dragon Boat Festival Makes History on Kabul River, Strengthening Pakistan-China Friendship

SARDARYAB, Charsadda: Pakistan and China added another vibrant chapter to their longstanding friendship as the historic Dragon Boat Festival was successfully held on the banks of the Kabul River, marking the first-ever event of its kind in Pakistan.

Organised by China Window, the Chinese cultural centre based in Peshawar, the festival transformed the scenic waters of the Kabul River into a colourful celebration of sports, culture and people-to-people ties. Thousands of spectators gathered along the riverbanks to witness the unique spectacle, which blended ancient Chinese traditions with local enthusiasm.

The thrilling boat race concluded with a joint victory for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police team and the Charsadda team. The Sports Writers Association secured second place, while the Peshawar High Court team finished third.

Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Culture and Tourism Malik Adil Iqbal attended the event as chief guest. Provincial ministers Fazal Shakoor and Akhtarullah Jan, members of the provincial assembly, Deputy Commissioner Charsadda Azmatullah Wazir, Additional Deputy Commissioner Rina Abbasi, senior government officials, Chinese guests and community leaders also participated in the celebrations.

More than 100 rowers competed in the races, showcasing teamwork, determination and athletic skill. One of the festival’s most notable highlights was the participation of female rowers, marking the first time such a large number of women took part in a boat racing competition in the region.

The district administration ensured comprehensive security arrangements, while the Federal Constabulary Band entertained the audience with performances celebrating Pakistan-China friendship. FC personnel also presented a vibrant Khattak Dance, adding a local cultural touch to the festivities.

Addressing the gathering, Malik Adil Iqbal said the successful hosting of the Dragon Boat Festival projected a positive image of Pakistan to China and the wider world while creating new opportunities for tourism and cultural exchange.

China Window Administrator Amjad Aziz Malik said the festival had introduced an important Chinese cultural tradition to Pakistan and helped bring the people of both countries even closer. Following the overwhelming response, organisers expressed confidence that the Dragon Boat Festival would become an annual event and a lasting symbol of Pakistan-China friendship.
