RIYADH: Traditional women’s attire across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reflects a vibrant facet of national cultural heritage, distinguished by varied cuts, regional palettes, fine fabrics, and intricate hand-embroidery tailored to daily routines and festive occasions.
In the central regions, wardrobes featured loose-fitting dresses with sweeping sleeves, lightweight decorative overlay tunics in deep red or black, and an array of long traditional gowns tailored in Indian cuts, rose-patterned needlework, or metallic gold thread embellishments.
In Makkah Region, clothing was closely tied to social occasions, prominently featuring flowing gowns made of multi-coloured fabrics accented with silk, metallic threads, and bold borders.
In Madinah Region, women favoured full-length, long-sleeved tunics where lighter tones were chosen by older women and vibrant silks by younger generations, alongside dark-pink bridal gowns richly adorned with metallic cords.
Across Eastern Region, traditional garments were characterised by flowing silhouettes that ranged from lightweight everyday dresses to layered, formal outer gowns lavishly stitched with silk and metallic embroidery.
In the northern regions—including Hail, Al-Jouf, Northern Borders, and Tabuk—designs responded directly to the climate and environment.
Notable garments included full-length gowns with floor-sweeping triangular sleeves, dresses tailored with folded waistbands worn beneath ankle-length outer tunics, formal wedding robes, buttoned front vests, and vertically pleated silk dresses woven with metallic threads.
The southern regions showcased exceptional decorative artistry. In Aseer, black silk dresses were densely hand-stitched across the chest or throughout the full garment with gold and silver threads in varying patterns.
In Al-Baha, flowing black dresses featured delicate hand-embroidery across the chest and seams, reserved for holiday celebrations. In Jazan, coastal, mountain, and plain terrains fostered diverse styles, including hand-stitched tunics paired with patterned trousers, while girls wore vibrant yellow-and-red patterns.
In Najran, women wore wide-sleeved black over-dresses tailored with chest and waist accents over full-length white undergarments.
Beyond regional aesthetics, these traditional garments preserve ancestral knowledge in fabric selection, natural colour palettes, and tailoring craftsmanship. Utilising cotton, wool, silk, metallic threads, and beadwork, each piece reflects the geography of its origin and remains an enduring expression of collective cultural memory.
