ISLAMABAD: With 104 matches, 48 teams, and a continent-sized stage across the United States, Mexico, and Canada, the FIFA World Cup 2026 is poised to be the most goal-filled edition in history, and that makes the race for the Golden Boot more thrilling than ever.

WE News English takes a closer look at six top contenders vying for the World Cup Golden Boot, the ultimate recognition for the tournament’s highest goal-scorer.

Kylian Mbappe – France

The Golden Boot winner of the last World Cup in Qatar is once again the runaway favourite to retain his crown. With 12 goals in 14 matches, the 27-year-old is already one of the most prolific scorers in World Cup history.

The star striker is in great form and finished as the highest goal-scorer in LaLiga this season. With France among the favourites to win the tournament, Mbappe is certainly the top choice to win a historic second Golden Boot.

Lionel Messi – Argentina

The only silverware still out of reach for Lionel Messi is the World Cup Golden Boot. As Argentina aim to successfully defend their title, the legend will hope to claim that award as well.

He was the top scorer in Argentina’s qualifying campaign, and there is no reason he cannot replicate that form in the main event, especially with the burden of winning the World Cup title now lifted from his shoulders.

Harry Kane – England

The winner of the Golden Boot in 2018, Kane will once again be expected to lead England’s goal-scoring charge. He was the joint-highest scorer at the 2024 Euros and has been a goal-scoring machine for Bayern Munich.

With a strong England frontline supplying him the ball, there is every chance for Kane to become the highest World Cup scorer in two separate editions.

Cristiano Ronaldo – Portugal

While critics will point to his poor World Cup record, Ronaldo has much to prove in the upcoming World Cup. He cannot afford to fumble his final chance to lead Portugal to a World Cup title.

If the team manages a deep run, Ronaldo knows he will have to play a key role. He was Al-Nassr’s highest scorer in their Saudi Pro League winning run this season, and Portugal will want him to continue that fine form in their colours.

Lamine Yamal – Spain

One of the most exciting young footballers in the world, Yamal could also be in contention for the Golden Boot.

The youngster finished with the most assists at the 2024 Euros and will once again be a prominent feature in Spain’s attack. However, he might miss the first few matches of the event, a factor that could hurt his chances of becoming the youngest-ever Golden Boot winner.

Erling Haaland – Norway

While not included in the earlier list of favourites due to Norway’s absence from the 2022 World Cup, Erling Haaland enters the 2026 tournament as one of the most feared strikers on the planet.

Having finally guided Norway to a major international stage, the Manchester City goal machine has nothing left to prove at club level, now he wants World Cup glory. With his blistering pace, raw power, and clinical finishing, Haaland could easily dismantle any defense and storm his way to the Golden Boot, provided Norway makes a deep enough run. If there is a dark horse in this race, it is the Norwegian cyborg.
