OSLO: The Russian mercenary group Wagner’s former member who fled to Norway about ten days ago has been apprehended for violating immigration law.
According to Norwegian police, 26-year-old Andrei Medvedev crossed the Norwegian-Russian border in the far north on 13 January and sought asylum in Norway.
Medvedev’s lawyer told AFP last week that he was willing to speak about his experiences in the Wagner Group to investigators of war crimes.
He claims to have fought in Ukraine for 4 months before deserting in November when the paramilitary group led by businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin allegedly extended his contract against his will.
Medvedev interrogated in Norway
A likely valuable witness in highlighting the group’s reported brutality in Ukraine, Medvedev has been interrogated by Norwegian authorities since arriving in Norway.
Police did not specify the exact causes of his arrest and decline to comment further on the matter. –AFP/APP
