ISLAMABAD: In a shameful display of petulance, Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli has come under heavy criticism for his behaviour during an IPL 2026 match, which subsequently unleashed a pack of rabid Indian social media fanatics onto Australian cricketer Travis Head and his family.

What began as an on-field verbal spat in an IPL encounter, has devolved into a disturbing online witch-hunt, exposing the dangerous toxicity of celebrity worship in Indian cricket culture.

Kohli’s antics draw sharp criticism

During Friday’s IPL match between Travis Head’s Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the former India captain became embroiled in a heated exchange with Head.

After Kohli was dismissed for a paltry 15 runs and his side slumped to a 55-run defeat, the veteran batter ignored Head’s outstretched hand during post-match handshakes while greeting other players.

Cricket analysts and fans alike have slammed Kohli’s actions as unbecoming of a player of his stature. “This is not the first time Kohli has let his ego get the better of him,” one commentator noted. “His refusal to shake hands was a petty, childish act that set the stage for the madness that followed.”

Indian social media fanatics go on the rampage

Following the match, Instagram accounts belonging to both Travis Head and his wife, Jessica, were flooded with thousands of abusive comments, threats, and hateful messages, from self-proclaimed “Kohli loyalists.” These fanatics, often described as a toxic online army, did not stop at the players themselves.

Jessica Head told media that friends and family members had also been targeted with vile private messages. “I woke up to my socials blasting… we are fine but they are attacking my friends and family,” she said, visibly shaken.

She drew a direct line to a previous incident, calling it a “repeat of the abuse that happened after the World Cup”, referring to the 2023 ODI World Cup final, when Australia defeated India in Ahmedabad, sparking a similar online frenzy.

A call for sanity amid fanatical madness

“Passion will always be part of sport, but so is remembering there are real people and families behind the game,” Jessica added. “Hopefully this encourages more kindness and support for one another.”

Her plea, however, stands in stark contrast to the behavior of Kohli’s most extreme followers, who have repeatedly shown a willingness to harass and intimidate anyone perceived as crossing their idol.

No accountability from Kohli or IPL

As of now, neither Kohli nor the IPL has issued any statement condemning the online abuse or acknowledging his own role in inflaming his fanatics.

The cricketer has remained silent, leaving many to question whether the league will take meaningful action against the toxic culture festering within its fanbase.
