ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated the country’s commitment to expand trade and investment ties with the European Union.

Prime Minister Sharif made the remarks during a meeting with a high-level European Union trade and business delegation in Islamabad, the Prime Minister’s office (PMO) said in a statement.

The delegation was led by Peters Stubbs, Director for Asia Pacific at the European Commission Directorate-General for International Partnerships.

It included Thourya Triki, Director of International Partners at the European Investment Bank; Manuel Pauser, Vice President at Adidas; Karl Shloegelbauer, Vice President at Andritz; and Dieter Metkke, Regional Director at IKEA. Also present was the European Union Ambassador to Pakistan, Raymond Kerr.

“The European Union is Pakistan’s largest trading partner and the main destination for our exports in terms of volume,” he said, adding that the government remained committed to expanding commercial ties and attracting investment.

The Prime Minister assured the delegation from the European Union that the government would continue making strong efforts to enhance trade and investment ties.

He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining economic stability despite regional challenges, including rising oil prices linked to the situation in the Middle East.

In this context, the Prime Minister referred to his recent telephone conversations with Antonio Costa, during which both sides discussed ways to further strengthen Pakistan–EU relations as well as the evolving regional security environment.

The European Union delegation praised the Pakistan government’s full cooperation in hosting the European Union Pakistan Business Forum.

Members of the delegation shared their experiences of investment in Pakistan and stated that there are strong prospects for further promoting B2B relations between the European Union and Pakistan in various sectors, including energy, communications, IT, and others.

Separately, the prime minister held a telephone conversation with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, during which the two leaders discussed the evolving situation in the Middle East and bilateral relations, according to an official statement.
