ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday directed the acceleration of efforts to promote electric vehicles (EVs) across the country.
PM Sharif issued these directions while chairing a review meeting on EV promotion, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.
“In view of the prevailing regional situation and the requirements of the future, the promotion of EVs will not only reduce the fuel import bill, but it is also extremely important for protecting the environment and energy security,” the statement said.
Under the National EV Policy, transparency in the distribution of subsidies for electric motorcycles to low-income individuals must be ensured, along with expediting the implementation of the scheme.

“The meeting was briefed on the ongoing measures for the nationwide promotion of EVs,” according to the statement.
The briefing revealed that 72 manufacturing certificates have been issued nationwide for the production of electric motorcycles and rickshaws, while four certificates have been granted for electric vehicles.
The meeting was told that 123 applications have so far been received for setting up EV charging stations. Plans are underway to convert 30 percent of the country’s vehicle fleet to electric within the next five years, a move expected to save up to $4.5 billion in fuel imports.
The meeting was briefed that electric motorbikes would be provided to government employees of Grade 16 on easy installments, it added.
In January, the government introduced the Pakistan Accelerated Vehicle Electrification (PAVE) scheme to speed up the country’s shift toward clean, affordable, and sustainable transport. The initiative aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while promoting the development of local electric vehicle manufacturing.
