SINGAPORE: Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz showed limited disruption on the first full day of a US blockade targeting vessels linked to Iranian ports, even as Washington claimed it had effectively halted Iran’s sea-based trade.

According to Reuters, at least eight vessels, including three linked to Iran, passed through the strategic waterway on Tuesday, based on shipping data and industry sources.

The blockade, announced by US President Donald Trump following peace talks with Iran in Islamabad, has raised uncertainty among global shipping companies and insurers. However, maritime activity remains far below pre-war levels, when more than 130 vessels transited the strait daily.

US Central Command, however, presented a far stronger assessment of the blockade’s impact. “A blockade of Iranian ports has been fully implemented as U.S. forces maintain maritime superiority in the Middle East.

An estimated 90% of Iran’s economy is fueled by international trade by sea. In less than 36 hours since the blockade was implemented, U.S. forces have completely halted economic trade going into and out of Iran by sea,” said Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM Commander.

Earlier, the US military said several vessels had complied with instructions to turn back, reinforcing its enforcement posture in the region.

Despite this, ships not bound for Iranian ports — including some Iran-linked tankers — continued to pass through the strait without direct interference.

China criticised the US move as “dangerous and irresponsible”, warning it could further escalate tensions.

Analysts suggest the blockade may be enforced selectively.

Experts note that while war-risk insurance costs remain elevated, they have stabilised for now, with commercial traffic expected to remain cautious amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
