UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has called for renewed political will to achieve a comprehensive peace settlement in Yemen, warning that ongoing divisions and regional tensions continue to hinder progress.

Addressing a UN Security Council briefing, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, said the situation in Yemen remains deeply concerning and requires sustained international attention.

He stressed that efforts toward a political resolution must deliver tangible progress while adapting to evolving realities on the ground. Highlighting internal challenges, he noted that competing political actors, particularly in southern Yemen, are undermining unity and weakening state institutions.

Ambassador Jadoon reaffirmed that the Presidential Leadership Council remains the internationally recognised authority but cautioned that fragmentation risks obstructing the path to a comprehensive settlement.

Yemeni stakeholders

He urged Yemeni stakeholders to engage constructively with the UN-led process and move beyond incremental steps, ensuring that any agreement reflects the aspirations of the Yemeni people.

The envoy also warned against Yemen being drawn into broader regional conflict, emphasising that attacks on maritime routes are unacceptable as they disrupt global trade and threaten energy and food supply chains.

He called for the protection of shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

On the humanitarian front, he described conditions as dire, citing millions in need of assistance, food security and healthcare. He called on donors to scale up funding and ensure unhindered access for humanitarian aid.

Pakistan also condemned the detention of UN and humanitarian personnel, urging their immediate release and respect for international law.

Concluding, he stressed that sustained engagement is essential to achieving peace, stability and improved conditions for the Yemeni people.
