ISLAMABAD: FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will play their World Cup matches in the United States as scheduled, despite the ongoing conflict involving the two countries.
The Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) had earlier requested that their group-stage fixtures be moved to Mexico, citing concerns over the United States’ involvement in regional military operations alongside Israel. The federation said it had been in discussions with FIFA regarding a potential venue change, while Iran’s sports ministry has also restricted teams from travelling to nations it considers hostile.
However, Infantino dismissed the possibility of relocating the matches during a visit to Türkiye, where he watched Iran’s 5-0 friendly victory over Costa Rica.
“No, no, the matches will be where they should be according to the draw,” he said. “It looks like we’ll be in the right grounds. We’re delighted because they’re a very, very strong team, as we saw today. I’m very happy. I saw the team, I spoke to the players and the coaches.”
Iran, who secured qualification in March last year, are set to play all their Group G matches in the US—two in Los Angeles and one in Seattle—against Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand.
Iran’s team
US President Donald Trump recently stated that Iran’s team would be allowed to compete in the United States, although he raised concerns about their safety, later clarifying that any threat would not originate from the US.
Meanwhile, striker Sardar Azmoun was left out of the squad for the training camp amid reports in Iranian media suggesting he had been dropped over perceived disloyalty.
Infantino also addressed the Iranian squad directly, offering support while avoiding broader political commentary.
“From now until the World Cup, I will do whatever I can to support the Iran national team,” he said.
“If you want to organise a training camp or if there is any matter related to activities outside the country, whatever it is, I will help.
“Whenever you want, please stay in contact. I am at your service and will help with anything you need.”
The World Cup is scheduled to take place across the United States, Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
