JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has welcomed the United Nations Human Rights Council’s adoption of several key resolutions addressing the situation in Palestine, describing the move as an important step toward accountability and the protection of fundamental rights.

In a statement issued following the Council’s 61st session in Geneva, held from February 23 to March 31, the OIC praised the adoption of a resolution focusing on the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Wednesday.

The resolution underscores the obligation to ensure justice and accountability, aligning with the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and related provisional measures.

The measure also reinforces the mandate of an independent Commission of Inquiry tasked with examining issues such as the transfer and supply of arms and related materials to Israel, as well as broader implications for international humanitarian law.

Another significant resolution addressed Israeli settlement activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and the occupied Syrian Golan.

It reiterates that such settlements are in violation of international law, including provisions of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits the transfer of populations into occupied territories.

The resolution further mandates continued monitoring of settler-related violence and calls for accountability measures by relevant parties.

The Council also reaffirmed the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, describing it as an inalienable right and urging all countries to support efforts that enable Palestinians to realize this principle.

Additionally, a separate resolution highlighted human rights conditions in the occupied Syrian Golan, pointing to ongoing violations against Syrian residents and calling for adherence to international legal standards.

The OIC emphasized that these resolutions collectively reflect growing international concern over developments in the occupied territories and reaffirm the global community’s commitment to upholding justice, human rights, and international law.
