LAHORE: Karachi Kings secured a thrilling 14-run victory over Quetta Gladiators in the second match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 11 at Gaddafi Stadium on Friday, successfully defending their total of 181.

Kings set competitive target after Moeen Ali heroics

Earlier in the evening, Karachi Kings posted 181 for seven after Quetta Gladiators captain Saud Shakeel won the toss and opted to field first. Moeen Ali starred with an unbeaten 48 off just 29 deliveries, smashing four boundaries and three sixes to propel the Kings past the 180-run mark.

David Warner contributed a brisk 35 off 22 balls, while Salman Agha added a quickfire 22 off 10 deliveries. Saad Baig chipped in with 30 off 23 balls. For Quetta, Ahmed Daniyal was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets for 36 runs, while Alzarri Joseph took two for 32.

Gladiators fall short despite Shamyl Hussain’s blitz

Chasing 182 for victory, Quetta Gladiators finished at 167 for seven in their 20 overs, falling 14 runs short of the target.

Shamyl Hussain provided a flying start for the Gladiators, smashing 52 off just 24 deliveries, including five fours and four sixes, at a staggering strike rate of 216.66. He put on a 79-run opening partnership with captain Saud Shakeel, who contributed 33 off 25 balls.

However, the Kings’ bowling attack, led by Hasan Ali, triggered a middle-order collapse that derailed Quetta’s chase. Hasan Ali was the wrecker-in-chief, returning exceptional figures of four wickets for 27 runs in his four overs. He dismissed Rilee Rossouw for 25, Hasan Nawaz for 19, and then struck twice in quick succession to remove Tom Curran for a duck and Ahmed Daniyal for four.

Ben McDermott offered late resistance with an unbeaten 25 off 13 balls, but his efforts were not enough to take the Gladiators over the line. Adam Zampa and Salman Agha also chipped in with one wicket each, while Moeen Ali claimed one wicket in his economical spell of four overs that cost just 26 runs.

Key moments

The turning point of the match came in the 18th over when Hasan Ali dismissed Hasan Nawaz and Tom Curran off consecutive deliveries, effectively ending Quetta’s hopes. Despite Shamyl Hussain’s explosive half-century, the Gladiators could not recover from the middle-order collapse.
