ISLAMABAD: India’s dominant men’s cricket team will receive a cash reward of $14 million after winning the T20 World Cup for a record third time, the country’s cricket board announced on Tuesday.
The co-hosts and tournament favourites defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in Sunday’s final in Ahmedabad, becoming the first team to successfully defend the title and the first to win the tournament on home soil.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), widely regarded as the richest and most influential governing body in world cricket, congratulated the players, support staff and selectors for what it described as a “historic achievement” while announcing the financial reward.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the victory further strengthened India’s reputation as one of the most successful teams in the history of the T20 format.
The prize money will be distributed among the entire squad, including coaches and support personnel.
In addition to the board’s reward, the Indian team will also receive $2.34 million from the International Cricket Council, while runners-up New Zealand will take home $1.17 million.
Celebrations erupted across India on Sunday night as enthusiastic fans wearing blue jerseys filled the streets, beating drums and dancing to popular Bollywood songs to mark the team’s victory.
