  • Name was launched via a 25-second video on social media featuring Rawalpindi landmarks, with the team logo promised to be revealed soon.
  • Rebranding comes after former owner Ali Tareen declined to renew the contract, leading to an auction where Walee Technologies won the rights and relocated the team’s identity.

ISLAMABAD: The countdown to the 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) gained momentum as Rawalpindi-based franchise has revealed its new team name.

With the tournament scheduled to run from March 26 to May 3, the franchise, now under new ownership, has been christened ‘Pindiz’.

The unveiling comes hot on the heels of a record-breaking acquisition earlier this month. Walee Technologies secured the rights to the team at a historic auction held at the Expo Centre in Lahore, winning with a staggering bid of Rs2.45 billion. Following the purchase, the new management exercised its option to rebrand the franchise, moving away from its previous identity as the Multan Sultans.

The new name was introduced to the public through a dynamic 25-second video shared across the franchise’s social media platforms. The clip features iconic landmarks of Rawalpindi, set against an upbeat musical score, aimed at capturing the city’s energetic spirit.

“Team Rawalpindi’s official franchise name is here. We’re bold. We’re challenging. We’re bringing the vibe. We’re changing the game,” the franchise captioned the video, signalling a new era for the team. The promotional material ended on a cliff-hanger, with text reading, “To be continued,” while the franchise confirmed that the official team logo will be revealed shortly.

From Champions to a New Chapter

The franchise’s journey to this rebranding began after the conclusion of the landmark 10th edition of the PSL last year. Former owner Ali Tareen opted not to renew the decade-long ownership contract, prompting the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to temporarily take the reins. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi had initially stated that the board would oversee the former champions’ affairs for the expanded 11-team edition.

However, plans shifted following the successful auctioning of two new franchises, Hyderabad Houston Kingsmen and Sialkot Stallionz, acquired by FKS Group and OZ Developers for Rs 1.75 billion and Rs 1.85 billion, respectively. The PCB subsequently decided to auction the Multan franchise as well.

The Auction Battle

The PCB invited bids last month, and after a ‘thorough and transparent’ process, a bid committee shortlisted five interested parties. The final auction saw a fierce bidding war, with Walee Technologies and CD Venturers emerging as the primary contenders. Despite a strong challenge from CD Venturers, Walee Technologies ultimately secured the winning bid.

With the right to rebrand included in the acquisition, owner Ahsan Tahir confirmed the team’s new geographical allegiance, cementing its identity as Rawalpindi’s representative in the league. As the PSL gears up for its biggest edition yet, ‘Pindiz’ is set to begin its campaign with a fresh look and a renewed sense of purpose.
