WASHINGTON: Saudi Arabia has reaffirmed its strong support for Sudan’s unity and sovereignty during a UN Security Council ministerial meeting in New York.

The Kingdom’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Abdulaziz Alwasil, condemned recent drone attacks by the Rapid Support Forces targeting civilian and humanitarian sites, including a military hospital and a World Food Programme convoy, calling them serious violations of international law, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

He also highlighted Saudi Arabia’s ongoing diplomatic efforts, particularly the Jeddah talks and coordination with the United States and regional partners, aimed at reaching a comprehensive political resolution to the conflict.

Saudi Arabia has provided $3.1 billion in assistance to Sudan so far, underscoring its commitment to supporting the Sudanese people through the ongoing crisis.

The nearly three-year conflict has killed tens of thousands, displaced 11 million, and created what the UN describes as one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

With ceasefire talks stalled for months, the UN has repeatedly called on both parties to respect international humanitarian law and ensure unhindered aid access.

The UN warned last month that food aid in Sudan could run out by the end of March without new funding, raising concerns for millions affected by the world’s largest hunger crisis.

Famine was previously declared by the UN in three displacement camps near El-Fasher and in parts of the Nuba Mountains in the south.
