Field Marshal Asim Discusses Counterterrorism With Marco Rubio in Munich

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), on Saturday, held a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the 62nd Munich Security Conference, where the two leaders exchanged views on regional and global security developments as well as counterterrorism cooperation.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the discussions covered a range of issues of shared concern, including evolving security challenges, contemporary regional dynamics and measures aimed at strengthening anti-terrorism collaboration between the two sides.

The army chief was on an official visit to Germany from February 12 to 14 to attend key engagements held alongside the annual international security forum, which brings together senior policymakers, defence officials and military leaders from across the world.

During his stay, the Field Marshal also interacted with German authorities and met with military leadership from Brazil and Lebanon, with talks focusing on modern security concerns, bilateral defence cooperation and the broader objective of advancing peace and stability through both bilateral and multilateral dialogue.

Contemporary security issues

As part of his meetings with German officials, the statement said:

“COAS and CDF called on Mr Alexander Dobrindt, Federal Minister of the Interior, Federal Republic of Germany, Mr Günter Sautter, Foreign Policy & Security Policy Advisor to Federal Chancellor of Germany and General Carsten Breuer, Chief of Defence, Federal Armed Forces.”

“The meetings focused on contemporary security issues, bilateral defence cooperation and the need for promoting global peace and security through bilateral and multilateral dialogue,” the statement added.

In addition, the military’s media wing noted:

“Besides, COAS & CDF held a productive engagement with Admiral Renato Rodrigues de Aguiar Freire, Chief of the Joint Staff, Brazilian Armed Forces and discussed bilateral military cooperation.”

The COAS also met General Rodolph Haykal, Commander of the Armed Forces of the Lebanese Republic, with the ISPR stating:

“During the interaction, the global and regional security situation and measures to enhance bilateral defence collaboration were discussed,” ISPR noted.
