NEW DELHI: India opener Abhishek Sharma has been admitted to hospital with a stomach infection and is a doubt for Thursday’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match against Namibia in Delhi, according to Indian media reports.
The left-handed batter has reportedly been in a private hospital in the capital for the past two days.
Concerns over Abhishek’s fitness first emerged during India’s opening match of the tournament against the USA in Mumbai. After falling for a first-ball duck, he did not return to the field during the USA innings. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate later confirmed that the batter was dealing with a stomach illness.
“Abhi is still experiencing some stomach issues,” ten Doeschate said at the time. “We are hopeful he will be ready in a couple of days.”
If Abhishek is ruled out, India may turn to Sanju Samson at the top of the order. Meanwhile, pacer Jasprit Bumrah is set to return after illness, and all-rounder Washington Sundar has rejoined the squad following recovery from a side strain.
