ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday expressed his desire to deepen economic integration with Indonesia, seeking Jakarta’s expertise in managing sovereign wealth and setting a firm 2027 deadline for a new, comprehensive trade pact.

During a meeting with a visiting five-member Indonesian delegation led by Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani, PM Sharif specifically expressed Pakistan’s desire to learn from Indonesia’s successful Sovereign Wealth Fund model, state Run-Radio Pakistan reported.

Both sides agreed to accelerate efforts to transform the existing Preferential Trade Agreement into a full-fledged Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by 2027.

The Prime Minister emphasised that Pakistan is eager to strengthen its long-standing fraternal relations with Indonesia through stronger economic cooperation.

He extended best wishes to President Prabowo Subianto, noting that the Indonesian leader’s visit to Pakistan last year had been highly productive in strengthening bilateral ties.

Indonesian Minister Rosan Roeslani reaffirmed his country’s commitment to advancing the partnership. The meeting was also attended by Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, and Minister of State Bilal Azhar Kiani.

Bilateral trade between Pakistan and Indonesia stood at around $2.1 billion in 2025, with Pakistan’s exports accounting for nearly $950 million and imports from Indonesia at $1.15 billion.

The two countries have set a target to increase bilateral trade to $5 billion over the next five years, with particular emphasis on agriculture, food processing, and industrial goods.
