LONDON: London is positioning itself at the forefront of the artificial intelligence revolution, with Mayor Sadiq Khan unveiling a bold plan to prepare the city’s workforce for rapid technological change and to ensure AI becomes a driver of opportunity rather than disruption.

Speaking on Thursday, the Labour mayor acknowledged the scale of transformation AI could bring to the world of work, particularly in a global city like London that is home to a high concentration of finance, professional services and creative industries. He stressed that early action is essential to protect jobs and unlock the technology’s full potential, repors Reuters.

In a major policy move, Khan announced a comprehensive review of AI’s impact on London’s jobs market, alongside free AI training for millions of Londoners. The initiative aims to equip workers with new skills, helping them adapt and thrive as technology reshapes industries.

While warning of the risks of inaction, Khan highlighted the “huge potential benefits” of AI when used responsibly, from boosting productivity to creating new roles and industries. He urged swift, coordinated efforts by government, businesses and educators to guide the transition and ensure inclusive growth.

“London is at the sharpest edge of change,” Khan is expected to say, noting that the city’s diversity and innovation ecosystem also place it in a strong position to lead globally in responsible AI adoption.

According to Reuters, the focus on preparation and skills was echoed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office, which said artificial intelligence will reshape the world of work but also open up new opportunities. A Downing Street spokesperson said the government is committed to embracing the new roles and economic potential AI will create, even as some jobs evolve.

International bodies are also encouraging proactive responses. The United Nations has underlined the importance of education, training and policy reform to ensure AI and automation strengthen labour markets rather than deepen inequalities—especially for young people entering high-skill professions.

With early investment in skills, forward-looking policy and open debate, London aims to turn the AI transition into a moment of renewal, securing jobs, innovation and long-term economic resilience.
