TURBAT, Pakistan: Nearly 800 young people from Kech district in Pakistan’s Balochistan province participated in the first-ever 5-kilometre Mini Marathon on Sunday, sending a strong message of unity, resilience, and hope.
The event, part of the Kech Sports and Fitness Festival 2026, brought together youth from diverse backgrounds, reflecting a shared commitment to peace, healthy lifestyles, and constructive community engagement.
Sports as a tool for social cohesion
Officials highlighted the growing role of sports in promoting social cohesion and youth empowerment in the province.
They said such initiatives provide young people with positive platforms for their energy and help discourage the influence of violence and extremism.
The successful organisation of the marathon was supported by FC Balochistan (South), demonstrating the importance of collaboration between local institutions and communities to foster wellness, discipline, and unity, officials added.
“The strong participation and enthusiastic response show that the youth of Kech are eager to contribute to a peaceful and progressive future through sports and civic engagement,” officials said.
Initiatives to promote sports
The Balochistan government, along with federal initiatives, actively uses sports and youth engagement to counter terrorism, particularly in areas affected by Indian sponsored terrorist groups, officials said.
Promoting sports is the top priority of the provincial government, with efforts underway to expand facilities and activities to remote areas of the province, officials said.
According to government officials, the Balochistan government is also working to introduce more sports disciplines in schools to nurture young talent.
Pakistan’s youth are increasingly participating in global platforms, competing in academic contests, joining sports leagues in Europe and Africa, and representing the country internationally.
“These initiatives are not only helping to foster talent but also to strengthen community bonds and inspire young people to choose constructive and peaceful paths,” officials said.
