ISLAMABAD/LONDON: British police have said they had opened an investigation into a package containing uranium that was seized at Heathrow Airport London.
Police said that border agents discovered a package during the routine search on December 29. According to reports, the parcel arrived on a flight from Oman, according to The Sun, which first reported the story.
Package found in a shipment of scrap metal
According to the BBC, the uranium was found in a shipment of scrap metal, and investigators were looking into whether it resulted from “poor handling.”
Police commander Richard Smith said I want to reassure the public that the amount of the contaminated material was tiny and has been assessed by the experts as posing no threat to the public.
“Although our investigation remains ongoing, from our inquiries so far, it does not appear to be linked to any direct threat.”
