Key points

• Beijing denies the claim and says its pilots acted lawfully
• Incident took place over the East China Sea near disputed islands (Senkaku/Diaoyu)
• Japan lodges a strong protest and seeks steps to avoid future risks

TOKYO: Japan summoned China’s ambassador after its defence ministry said a Chinese fighter jet locked its fire-control radar on a Japanese maritime patrol aircraft over the East China Sea, a charge Beijing rejected through an official statement.

In a briefing quoted by AP News, Japan’s defence ministry said the incident occurred on Friday during routine surveillance over waters near the Senkaku Islands (claimed by China, also called Diaoyu in China). Officials said the radar lock lasted long enough to be considered a serious threat.

Reuters reported that Japan’s vice foreign minister called in China’s envoy to lodge a strong protest. Tokyo said the action created a high risk of escalation and demanded that Beijing prevent similar incidents.

China dismissed the accusation. Its defence ministry said the Japanese aircraft entered airspace that China regards as under its jurisdiction. It said the Chinese jet took “necessary measures” and insisted that no radar lock occurred, according to AFP.

Regional analysts told international media that such confrontations have increased as both countries expand air patrols near contested zones. They warned that even brief encounters can turn dangerous when military aircraft fly in proximity.

Japan said it would continue to monitor the area and share information with partners.
