LOS ANGELES: Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban announced their separation in September, but signs of trouble surfaced much earlier.

Fans now believe Urban hinted at the breakup during his show The Road, where he performed a song that many say pointed to the emotional strain of a failing relationship.

The 57-year-old country star appeared to drop hints about the split in his show, The Road, which was filmed way earlier and was followed by the divorce news.

During the competition show, Kidman performed a song Messed Up as Me, in which touches upon the emotional turmoil of a toxic relationship when it is clearly heading towards the end.

“When you get mad, you stay that way / And you always say you’re doin’ OK / But we both know it’s probably a lie / And you’re fallin’ to pieces on the inside. And you’re out tonight like you always are / You’re dressed to kill, and your lips are red, and misery still loves company,” The Fighter singer sings on the song.

Urban previously reflected on the song, sharing, “This song is about a relationship … should we call it a relationship??? We’re calling it a relationship. It’s about two people who know they aren’t good for each other. It’s dysfunctional, makes no sense, it might even be toxic, but they keep going back because there’s one thing they’re REALLY good at !!!”

Although he explained the song in March 2024, the internet thinks he was referring to his own marital woes, considering what came later.

After the Babygirl star filed for divorce from Keith Urban, she told Ariana Grande in a conversation for Interview, which took place on October 19, that she was “hanging in there.”

Elsewhere in the interview, which was published November 24, Nicole—who shares daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14 with Keith— shared that she was surrounded by a great support system this summer as she filmed Practical Magic 2 amid the initial months of her separation.

On September 29, E! News had confirmed that she and the “Somebody Like You” singer had been living apart “since the beginning of summer.”

“I felt protected and loved,” Nicole added of being on set with costars Sandra Bullock, Joey King, and Maisie Williams. “It was just very, very safe.”

Since her separation from her husband of over 19 years, Nicole has kept a low profile, save for a few public appearances, including attending a Chanel fashion show alongside her daughters during Paris Fashion Week on October 7.
