GENEVA, Switzerland: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and diplomatic envoy Steve Witkoff are scheduled to arrive in Geneva on Sunday to discuss President Donald Trump’s plan to end the Ukraine war, a US official told AFP.
The official also said that US Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll, who met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Thursday, had already arrived in the Swiss city on Saturday.
“We will have an informal pre-meeting tonight for dinner” with Ukrainian delegates, the official said.
European officials are also expected in Switzerland on Sunday to discuss the plan, but no details have been provided on the format of the discussions.
Trump’s 28-point plan cedes to Russian demands such as Ukraine giving up territory, reducing the size of its army and abandoning plans to join NATO.
It offers Western security guarantees to Kyiv to prevent further Russian attacks.
Zelensky pushed back against the plan on Friday despite Trump’s insistence, saying he would propose “alternatives”.
Trump has given Zelensky until November 27 to respond to the proposed solutions.
Russia’s leader Vladimir Putin said he was willing to discuss the plan’s details but if Ukraine refused it Russia would push on with its offensive in Ukraine, launched in February 2022.
At the G20 summit in Johannesburg, the leaders of key European countries as well as Canada and Japan said in a declaration that the US plan needed “additional work” and risked leaving Ukraine “vulnerable to future attack”.
