UNITED NATIONS: The United States, along with several Arab and Muslim-majority countries—including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye on Friday urged the UN Security Council to swiftly approve a US resolution endorsing President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan.

“The United States, Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Jordan, and Türkiye express our joint support for the Security Council Resolution currently under consideration, drafted by the United States after consultation and in cooperation with Council members and partners in the region,” the countries said in a joint statement, adding they were seeking the measure’s “swift adoption.”

It added the historic Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict announced on September 29 is endorsed by the resolution and celebrated and endorsed in Sharm Al Sheikh.

“We are issuing this statement as the Member States that gathered during High-Level Week to begin this process, which offers a pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood. We emphasise that this is a sincere effort, and the Plan provides viable path towards peace and stability, not only between the Israelis and the Palestinians, but for the entire region,” it added.

Meanwhile the suffering of hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians in Gaza is worsening as a weather depression accompanied by rain and a cold air mass reached the enclave area, amid warnings of the risk of flooding and the collapse of worn-out tents and shelter centres.

The Gaza Civil Defence issued a series of urgent guidelines and warnings to residents – especially those displaced in tents – calling on them to take necessary precautions to avoid the dangers of flooding and collapses.

In a statement, the Civil Defence urged Palestinians to ensure that their tents are firmly secured, especially in areas near the coast that are exposed to strong winds, and to build sand barriers to prevent seawater from flowing into the tents.

Phase one of the ceasefire agreement—drawn from US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan—calls for the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The proposal also outlines the reconstruction of Gaza and the creation of a new governing structure that excludes Hamas.

Since October 2023, Israel’s military campaign has killed more than 69,000 people in Gaza—most of them women and children—and left much of the territory in ruins.
