MOSCOW: Ukraine launched a wave of drone attacks deep inside Russian territory overnight, striking an electricity substation in the northern Vologda region and damaging a residential building in Saratov, officials said Saturday.
Regional authorities confirmed that while the Vologda facility — located nearly 1,900 kilometers from Ukraine — was hit by three drones, power supplies remained unaffected. In Saratov, two people were injured after debris from a downed drone struck an apartment block, according to local officials.
The extent of the damage to the substation is still being evaluated, but electrical supplies in the area, located to the north of Moscow and approximately 1,900km from Ukraine, remain unaffected, Filimonov stated in a post on Telegram, reports Reuters.
In a separate incident, two individuals were injured when a Ukrainian drone hit a residential building in the Russian city of Saratov, according to local governor Roman Busargin, who made the statement on Telegram.
Industrial city
Saratov, an industrial city on the Volga River, situated 625 km (388 miles) from the Ukrainian border, has faced repeated Ukrainian drone attacks since Russia deployed tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine in February 2022.
In contrast, the more sparsely populated Vologda region has not been a frequent target of Ukrainian strikes.
Overall, Russia’s Defence Ministry reported on Saturday that it had intercepted 83 drones overnight, most of which were downed over regions bordering Ukraine.
