KABUL: The United Nations (UN) official Markus Potzel met with the Taliban-led Afghan administration minister for higher education Saturday to discuss the ban on girls and women attending universities.
According to Associated Press, he is the first international official to meet with the Taliban minister for education since the ban was introduced in Afghanistan.

Afghan Taliban on December, 20 issued directives to private and public universities to close for girls and women immediately until the next notice. It prompted widespread international condemnation, including from Muslim-majority countries such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.
The United Nations mission in Afghanistan said that Markus Potzel called for the lifting of ban in his meeting with the Taliban minister for higher education.

The spokesman of Ministry of Education, Ziaullah Hashmi said that the minister told the UN envoy that the ministry was working for the improvement of the people of Afghanistan as per national values.
