  • Afridi replaces Mohammad Rizwan as Pakistan’s new ODI captain.
  • The pacer’s first assignment will be the upcoming South Africa ODI series.

LAHORE, Pakistan: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday appointed fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi as captain of the national men’s One Day International (ODI) team, replacing Mohammad Rizwan.

The announcement came after a crucial meeting in Islamabad, involving white-ball head coach Mike Hesson, Director of High Performance Aqib Javed, and the selection committee.

Shaheen, who has previously captained Pakistan’s T20I side during the January 2024 New Zealand tour, will now lead the ODI team starting with the three-match series against South Africa in Faisalabad from November 4 to 8.

His appointment marks a new chapter for Pakistan’s limited-overs cricket as they look to build on recent performances.

Rizwan, who led Pakistan in 20 ODIs, recorded a 45% win rate, managing just nine victories against 11 defeats.

His leadership saw mixed results, especially after Pakistan’s disappointing loss in T20Is, which led to his removal as captain for the shortest format. Salman Ali Agha now takes over as T20I captain ahead of the New Zealand tour.

Shaheen’s leadership credentials will be tested as Pakistan prepares for their next ODI assignment against South Africa.
