RIYADH: Saudi inhabitants will be able to rent out rooms to tourists following a drastic amendment to the law which paves the grounds for Airbnb-style businesses.
The new law was approved by the Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb, which will allow a maximum of 3 permits issued per property. The latest law and rules ensure that the tourism field keeps up with the renaissance that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is undergoing and mirror the ministry of tourism’s efforts to obtain the targets of the development strategy for tourism in Saudi Arabia.
New law to promote tourism
The minister described the new regulation as a promising measure toward a prosperous tourism future. He tweeted, “These laws would allow the ministry to further strengthen cooperation with the private sector, and to offer jobs for the local competencies in the tourism sector”.

In order to apply for a permit, the ministry of tourism has outlined several conditions which have to be met by the applicants.

The house should be part of a property designated for either agricultural or residential use, and applicants must be Saudi citizens. The new laws also permit flexibility in financial payments as per the facility’s capacities.
Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb said that Saudi Arabia initiated 10 new policies aimed at expanding the sector of tourism and protecting tourists. The policies included laws for the sector, as well as regulations for quality control of services.
