ISLAMABAD: Afghanistan’s national football team arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday night for their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier against Pakistan, scheduled for October 9 at Jinnah Stadium.
The team’s arrival, confirmed by the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF), follows a brief visa delay earlier this week that raised concerns over the match’s viability.
However, swift coordination between the PFF and key Pakistani ministries ensured all formalities were completed, allowing the high-stakes South Asian clash to proceed as planned.
PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani extended his appreciation to the Government of Pakistan, citing the joint efforts of the Foreign Office, Ministry of Interior, Pakistan Sports Board, and the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination in facilitating smooth entry for the Afghan squad.
He emphasized that this reflects Pakistan’s increasing capability to host international sporting events.
The October 9 match is a vital fixture for both teams, who are chasing their first points in Group E of the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers.
Pakistan, under head coach Stephen Constantine, has been rigorously preparing for the encounter, while Afghanistan is expected to field a strong lineup despite limited pre-match training due to travel issues.
Security and logistical arrangements at Jinnah Stadium have been finalized, with local authorities and the Pakistan Sports Board ensuring a secure and organized environment.
