TEHRAN: Iran has said it supports any initiative that leads to an end to the ongoing war in Gaza, as the humanitarian situation in the besieged Palestinian enclave continues to deteriorate under intense Israeli military operations.

“We welcome any initiative that would, at this stage, lead to stopping the genocide in Gaza and allow humanitarian aid to reach the oppressed people of occupied Palestine”, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said during his weekly media briefing on Monday.

However, he voiced serious concerns about US US-proposed Gaza peace plan and its possible consequences, warning that such proposals could create “dangerous implications for Palestine, its people, and the region,” Iranian state news agency IRNA reported.

The statement comes amid growing global concern over the rising civilian death toll and the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where thousands have been killed or displaced in recent weeks.

Aid agencies have warned of an impending famine, with limited access to food, clean water, and medical supplies.

Meanwhile, delegations from Hamas and Israel began indirect talks in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh on ending the nearly two-year war in Gaza, Egyptian state-linked media reported.

Al-Qahera News, which is linked to state intelligence, said the delegations “are discussing preparing ground conditions for the release of detainees and prisoners”, in line with a proposal from US President Donald Trump to halt the ongoing Israeli military offensive in Gaza.

The Palestinian health ministry said on Monday that Israeli attacks have killed at least 21 people and wounded 96 over the past 24 hours.

The ministry said that the death toll in the Gaza Strip has surged to 67,160 – the majority of whom are women and children – since the beginning of the Israeli military offensive in October 2023. At least 169,679 others have been wounded.
