MOSCOW: Russia unleashed a barrage of drones, missiles, and guided aerial bombs across Ukraine on Sunday, killing at least five people in a major nighttime assault that targeted civilian infrastructure.
According to the Associated Press (AP), Ukraine’s air force reported that Moscow fired 53 ballistic and cruise missiles along with 496 drones, striking nine regions across the country. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attacks were among the most widespread in recent months.
In Lviv, four people — including a 15-year-old — were killed in combined drone and missile strikes, marking the deadliest attack on the historic western city since Russia’s invasion on February 24, 2022. Regional governor Maksym Kozytskyi said Russia launched around 140 Shahed drones and 23 ballistic missiles at the area.
The strikes left two districts of Lviv without power and disrupted public transport for hours, Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said, adding that a business complex on the city’s outskirts caught fire. Authorities described it as a civilian facility unrelated to Ukraine’s military operations.
As of early October 2025, the Russo-Ukrainian War is ongoing, with intense fighting focused primarily in eastern and southern Ukraine. Russia continues to launch major missile and drone attacks targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and cities, while Ukraine has retaliated with its own strikes deep inside Russian territory. The United States and European allies remain engaged in diplomacy and providing military aid, though disagreements over negotiating peace terms persist.
