DUBAI: Pakistan opener Saim Ayub said on Saturday his team is focused on winning the Asia Cup trophy, not just beating arch-rivals India, as the two sides prepare for their blockbuster clash in Dubai on Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference, the 22-year-old top-order batter made it clear: “Pakistan isn’t just thinking about India, we’re aiming for the trophy.”

“The goal isn’t just one match,” said Saim. “We want to win the tournament.”

When asked about facing India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, Saim smiled and said he’s ready for the challenge. He’s not focused on individuals, only on helping Pakistan win.

“I respect every bowler, but I’m ready to face anyone,” he said. “Right now, I just want to lead the team to victory.”

Saim also shared how the team doesn’t treat the India game as a pressure match. While it’s huge for fans, he explained, players stick to their roles and keep their minds steady.

“Every player wants to give their best,” he said. “And we trust each other to step up when it matters most.”

Saim highlighted the team’s strategy too, saying the playing XI depends on pitch conditions, especially when it comes to picking spinners on dry surfaces.

Looking back at their previous meeting in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the U.S., Saim said that the match is now a blur. The focus, he said, is on learning from the past but staying grounded in the present.

“We’re here to play fearless cricket,” he said. “That’s our mindset against India and every other team.”

Road to the Big Match

Pakistan arrived at the Asia Cup in solid form. They recently won a T20 tri-series in the UAE, beating Afghanistan and Oman. In their first Asia Cup match, Pakistan crushed Oman by 93 runs, scoring 160 before bowling them out for 67.

India, however, has also started strongly. They routed the UAE, dismissing them for just 57 runs and chasing the target in under 5 overs.

With both teams in good form, Sunday’s match promises to be a thrilling showdown.
