ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia’s King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) has delivered five trucks of humanitarian aid to flood-affected communities in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province, where weeks of heavy monsoon rains and river flooding have killed at least 60 people and disrupted millions.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif received Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki, on Monday, during which the Saudi envoy expressed condolences over the loss of lives due to the floods, according to a statement issued by the province’s ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party.

Flooding in Punjab, Pakistan’s key agricultural province, has claimed at least 60 lives and impacted over 4.1 million people since late August.

Triggered by heavy monsoon rains and additional water released from Indian rivers, the deluge has affected more than 4,330 areas.

Authorities are continuing large-scale evacuations from high-risk zones near rising rivers to protect residents from further devastation.

“Five trucks carrying relief goods for flood victims in seven districts of Punjab from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre have arrived,” the PML-N said, adding that Malki handed over the trucks to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab.

The relief aid includes 10,000 shelter kits and 10,000 food packages, the statement said. The shelter kits provided by KSrelief contain essential items such as tents, solar panels, LED lights, thermal blankets, plastic mats, durable kitchen sets, water coolers, and antibacterial soap.

Each food package, weighing 95 kilograms, includes flour, sugar, chickpea lentils, and cooking oil, the PML-N stated.

The aid will be distributed among flood-affected communities in Punjab’s Kasur, Jhang, Khanewal, Hafizabad, Chiniot, Multan, and Toba Tek Singh districts. The distribution will be carried out collaboratively by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), KSrelief, and the Hayat Foundation.

“This relief assistance for flood victims reflects Saudi Arabia’s ongoing solidarity and brotherhood with Pakistan,” said the PML-N.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif also expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their support.

“We are grateful to Saudi Arabia for providing 10,000 food baskets and 10,000 shelter/camp kits,” the Chief Minister was quoted as saying by her party.
